Week 4: Content Curator

This weeks posting is all about curation tools! Content curators are designed specifically for individuals to view what they want to view with a filter on the information. That's what I understood based off Bharati (2012) article If You Can’t Be a Creator, Then Be a Curator.  Bharati (2012) explains the overall idea of having content curation; with this individuals are provided with the most relevant information that they hold of interest.  Content curation is about quality. “ It’s not information overload. Its filter failure” a quote by Clay Shirky, caught my attention and definitely helps to explain the overall purpose of content curation.  There are many benefits of content curation, for example with this tool individuals are able to stay updated on topics of their interest, and as mentioned earlier filtering information to get rid of unnecessary and irrelevant information.

I definitely recommend everyone to visit Beth’s Blog, this blog breaks it down, simplifies how content curation is useful Content curator is involves a specific theme. Within the theme, information is rearranged, sorted and published.  This picture below is directly taken from Beth’s blog; through this visual you can see how to create a content curation. An individual would start off with a goal so a theme basically. Than pick certain topics that are relevant to the theme, find reliable sources containing applicable information. Sort and arrange the information in an organized fashion and lastly share.

In week 4, I was introduced to a Diigo, if I did not take ADED 1P32; I would of never new about this tool. Diigo is very useful and allows you to use this tool with smartphones, and tablets.  This is honestly a great tool for university students, textbooks can be expensive, electronic copies are much cheaper. With Diigo students have highlight and save what they have highlighted. Diigo is basically an electronic version of making personal notes, tags and highlighting important information on a textbook. With Diigo it is easier to find information that one is looking for rather then finding it on your own.

There are so many unique tools, that I found very useful for example, Google Alerts. My reason as to why I love Google alerts and it has great advantages because it allows me to stay updated with my social media sites. I will get notifications about anything posted online about me. You always want to be aware of such things, to prevent them from affecting ones careers and life.

This week on Feedly, I discovered another interesting post that I would like to share with you guys! Its called Vegan Chai Cheesecake with early gray sauce. This caught my attention because I LOVE DESERTS! The fact that this is vegan really caught my attention. I never new vegan deserts could be s delicious, you guys should go check out Beachwood donuts in St. Catherine’s. Its amazing then you will know why I was interested in this post!

Week Three: RSS

What is RSS?

This week is all about RSS! I honestly never realized that this exists. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, amazing new feed. This was designed for individuals to receive updates on the websites visited by them on a regular basis. RSS allows individuals to just simply receive information that they browse and search for on the web. This saves time for individuals to find the information, news or recent updates that they are interested on reading (Rowse, 2010).  Common Craft explains the difference between individuals looking for these updates and etc. themselves on the web compared to RSS notifying them with updates and blogs. For a better understanding of RSS, please watch this video! https://www.commoncraft.com/video/rss

I am astonished to see how technology is advanced, if it weren’t for my ADED 1P32 course, I would have never been introduced to RSS.  RSS is very similar to subscribing a magazine, the only difference is magazine gets received through mail and RSS is online. To get started with RSS, I recommend using Feedly; this is a easy way to become accustomed to subscriptions online. Feedly is very similar to emails, once you subscribe blogs, articles and etc. you will be able to see read, unread, new entries. RSS has many advantages; such as it allows individuals to keep track of their favorite websites that usually were bookmarked (Rowse, 2010).  In my opinion, RSS is great to stay caught up and updated on everything happening around us. With RSS, news can be brought to your attention without you having to search through so many websites and news feeds. As Wagner (2007) indicates, “ Once you find a trusted source, you want to be able to take advantage of future updates”.

Below are some examples listed that one can subscribe with RSS (Wagner, 2007):
  •        Blogs
  •     Podcasts
  •     Google News
  •     Wikis
  •      MSN

In order to sign up for Feedly, please make sure you have access to either chrome, Firefox, safari and etc. Additionally, one must make a Google account. Once you have set up your account, Feedly is very straightforward and easy to follow. You just need to choose categories that interest you and add it to your table of content. For more information please view this YouTube clip on how to set up Feedly!

This week, I was able to explore RSS and Feedly! Learning about new ways of using technology is great. I am glad to be introduced to tools such as RSS. I can create my own Feedly and subscribe to news and blogs that interest me. RSS is very convenient to use and I strongly recommend everyone to give this a chance and you will never subscribe a magazine ever!

Feedly

Hello Everyone!

Additional to my Week 3 post, I would like to blog about an interesting piece that I found on my Feedly. “ The perils of poor spelling: police arrest 10 year old boy for terrorist error”. This article appeared first on Daily Genius. I was shocked when I read this, which is why I decided to share this with my fellow friends on blogger. In sum, a 10-year-old boy Muslim boy got arrested and was under investigation because he wrote down mistakenly that he lived in a terrorist house.  Due to the young boys poor spelling, he had to go through integration by the British police. Even though, the police let the child, this must have had a huge impact on the child. Children and youth are vulnerable, and in situations such as this one, can definitely traumatize and have an effect on the child.

After reading this blog, I was shocked and am so grateful for being able to rely on Feedly, for providing me with news and updates that interest me.  In my child and youth courses, we focus a lot on children in youth in global context. We examine the lives of children throughout the world and how they differ. What can we do to help promote and protect their rights of children? Children are active participants in the society and they need to be treated equally.

Week 2: Personal Learning Environment

What is Personal Learning Environment?

This week was all about PLE; this stands for personal learning environment. Digital Study Skills describes PLE “as a digital toolbox… that is personal to each individual, created by them, owned by them, used by them within their lifelong learning”. You can think of a PLE as a system that assists learners to manage their own learning. An individual can create a PLE to help them set their own personalized goal, administer their learning styles and engage/ interact with others.  PLE is more of an informal learning than formal learning. It is important to experience both informal and formal learning. This reminds me of two courses offered at Brock University, ADED 1P31 Learning for Success and ADED 1P32 Learning in Digital Contexts. These two particular courses focus more on an individual’s learning style; great courses definitely recommend taking them! These courses have helped me organize and manage and organize my own learning. For more information regarding PLE, please visit this slideshare called Learning management systems and the personal learning environment: A bridge in the cloud? By Steve Wheeler http://www.slideshare.net/timbuckteeth/a-bridge-in-the-cloud

Attwell (2007) indicates some important aspects of personal learning environments. Education has taken a new approach, and has embedded the use of technology into their curriculum. Schools in the 21st century are now incorporating as much technology as they can. Our generations today, are known as multi-taskers and prefer to learn by using various sources available to them online. Attwell (2007) emphasizes on the importance of experiencing informal learning. Informal learning allows individuals to learn through all kinds of settings and contexts.  Attwell (2007) brought up a good point about how people learn their jobs. Atwell (2007) indicates that only 20 % of the learning process is done through formal learning, whereas, the rest is through informal. What I mean by this is that, often times individuals get trained on their position. However, they get more comfortable with their position through observations and asking questions, and learning from their mistakes. Lastly, Malan (2010) indicates that it is more important for individuals to focus on finding, sorting, sharing, critiquing and creating than simply reading, memorizing and recalling. For more information please view this Prezi presentation that explains more in depth about PLE. https://prezi.com/-xhpuupxgjin/growing-your-personal-learning-environment/

Moving on, here is a picture of my personal learning environment (PLE)!

Personal:
In 5 – 10 years time, I envision myself continuing my current occupation and growing with Caribbean Medical University as a Program Coordinator for their Premedical Program. Furthermore, in 5 – 10 years, I hope to continue my education, get my Masters in Social Work and pursue my dreams of becoming a Social Worker. If I were asked this same exact question about a year ago, I would have said inspiring educator. During my last semester at Brock University, I have finally been able to envision where I see myself. I am currently, working part- time for Caribbean Medical University, finishing up my last semester. Lastly, I hope to begin working at non-profit organizations to build my experience to get into masters of social work.

Learning:
To pursue my career as a Social Worker, I will have to learn more about essential skills and have a good foundation of knowledge. For beginners, I will need to complete my program and graduate. After graduating, through informal learning, I would have to build experience and get more fieldwork experience. However, in order for me to get this fieldwork experience required for me to apply for masters. I would need to make connections and stay caught up with issues related to children. I will have to learn through researching articles being published regarding children’s inequity issues, what fits for children and etc. I would need to be aware of what theorists are arguing and their standpoints on certain topics revolving children and youth. With the help of blogs, twitter, and Prezi, I will be able to share my views and opinions online for those who may be interested in similar topics as me.  In order to build experience, I would need to make connects, and network with individuals who are in the similar field as me. For this, I would need to learn, how to be professional on LinkedIn and etc. There is a lot of formal and informal learning required for me to do in order for me to pursue my dream job as a social worker.

Environment:
Environment has a huge impact on learning! An individual must be in a positive “studious” environment in order to want to learn. I love to learn in the comfort of my bed, but during examinations it gets really hard for me to find that motivation to continue studying.  It is important to pick a place to learn where either you are isolated from those who may be distractions and cellular devices. Studying in a quiet floor on the library really helps! For those like me who get easily distracted, should spend at least 3 – 4 hours in the library. Studying beside other students can help with motivation.

Habits:
As mentioned above, my bad habit in terms of environment is doing all my work in the comfort of my bed. Once I am in bed, I just feel so relaxed and calm; it makes me want to watch a show, talk to my roommates, online shop.  I have tried changing this habit. I actually live in an apartment that has a study room; I use to go there when I needed to get my work done. It was good until others walked in who had work to do, but allocated most of their time talking out loud, which is a distraction for those trying to do their work, especially me. Now, I just try to stay at school as long as I can to complete most of work their, so I can come back knowing I had a productive day and got majority of my work done.

In sum, a personalized learning environment can definitely be a positive approach for individuals to understand their own learning styles. There are many ways to look at PLE; for example, Wendy Drexler believes that PLE can empower learners to become accustomed to new technology and sources available. A personal learning environment is very unique and helpful. It allows individuals to organize and mange their own learning.
